This paper proposes a phase assignment algorithm “Silent Wave Algorithm (SWA)” for real-time MPEG traffic in ATM networks. Our algorithm decides when a new MPEG source should begin to transmit based on its notification parameters and traffic measurement of ongoing connections. Simulation results show that it is hard to accommodate MPEG traffic effectively without any control of phase assignment.
